Statement from the NC Sierra Club on Governor Perdue’s Veto of S 820

Raleigh - On Sunday Governor Beverly Perdue vetoed S 820, the fracking bill.  In response to the Governor’s actions, the following statement was given by Molly Diggins, state director of the NC Sierra Club:

“We applaud Governor Perdue for listening to the people of this state and vetoing this misguided piece of legislation.  We agree with the Governor that this legislation did not go far enough to protect drinking water and landowners.

We are committed to working with state legislators to uphold this veto to ensure that our drinking water resources aren’t needlessly put at risk of contamination.

We hope the legislature will turn its focus to finding ways to develop real energy solutions, like solar and offshore wind, that will create long term jobs while keeping our air and water clean.”
