Statement from the NC Sierra Club on the Legacy of Rep. Joe Hackney

RALEIGH - Rep. Hackney is a stalwart friend of North Carolina’s environment.  In his many roles - including Speaker of the North Carolina House, Speaker Pro Tempore, Majority Leader, and Minority Leader - Rep. Hackney has consistently stood on the side of protecting North Carolina’s water, air, and communities.

Rep. Hackney was one of the first environmental leaders in the North Carolina General Assembly and has continued in that role for more than 30 years.  He was a pioneer in the passage of important water quality legislation such as the Phosphate Detergent ban and the Watershed Protection Act.  He has been a leader in reducing solid waste and protecting state parks.  He played a leadership role in the passage of the Clean Smokestacks Act.  Over three decades, Rep. Hackney’s work has been essential in protecting North Carolina’s air, water, and communities.

History will record Rep. Hackney’s legacy as one of strength and courage.  We have no doubt that he will continue to serve his remaining days in office with similar fortitude and resolve.
