When: Friday, September 13 thru Sunday, September 15, 2013
Details: Fletcher Creek/Middle Fork Trails. Mills River Section of Pisgah National Forest. Backpack. Rated moderate on the blog where I found the trip. Elevation change is 1,100 ft. Nat Geo Map #780.
Let’s hope that the rains stop by September! We did Creekside Loop along the South Fork Mills River in April 2012. I described Creekside Loop in the trip report as “In-the-creek”. This trip has several creek crossings, all reported in the blog to be rock-hopping in normal rainfall period. Mills River is a really nice area. Drive is reasonable, as it is located just south of Asheville. This is where we saw the mother bear and cub …. who were as startled as we.
This trip starts out at the Fletcher Creek trailhead and follows the North Fork Mills River (which probably means wading based on our Creekside Loop trip) for about 1.5 miles. We will set base camp along the North Fork or after reaching Fletcher Creek depending on what camp sites we find. Saturday we will follow Fletcher Creek Trail to its connection with Spencer Creek Trail. We will sidetrack about a half mile on Spencer Creek to a beaver dam. Backtracking to Fletcher Creek, we will cross Fletcher Creek several times (wading?) and continue north through several meadows. We will then hike a short distance on a little used Forest Service road to connect with Middle Fork Trail. A mile along Middle Fork Trail will bring us to Spencer Gap with several choices of how to return to base camp.
Sunday we will pack up and out with a brunch stop on the way home. I expect to be back in Greensboro no later than 3:00 pm.
Group size is limited depending on experience of participants. More information on the Sierra Club web page http://northcarolina.sierraclub.org/
$25 (per each person in a group/family) refundable-at-the-trail head deposit required.
