Rachel Carson Research Reserve: Paddle and Hike
Event Date: Sat, Apr 12 10:00 to 1:00
Join us Saturday, April 12, 2014 for a paddling and walking tour of the Rachel Carson Reserve on Town Marsh Island near Beaufort, NC.
Starting from the state boat landing near the airport, we will paddle past historic downtown Beaufort and land at a sand beach on the Beaufort side of the island. Rachel Carson conducted research in this area in the 1940’s. Environmental organizations saved the islands from private development in the 1970’s, and they are now under state management. A walk on a marked nature trail through mud flats, uplands and salt marshes will allow us to see and experience the diverse estuarine environment. Wildlife in the area includes dolphins, feral horses and many types of birds including herons, egrets, pelicans, skimmers and more.
The paddle will take about one half hour each way, and the walk will be about one hour. The trip has been rated suitable for novice paddlers by the Crystal Coast Canoe & Kayak Club.
Meet at the state boat ramp at 10:00. Bring lunch and water; we will eat on the island. The walking trail may have wet areas. Please contact Jeff Monico at 252-752-7406 or at firstname.lastname@example.org
if you will be participating or to answer your questions.
