The Croatan Group Sierra Club Group has a service outing scheduled from 10:00AM until 2:30PM on Saturday, April 12 in Croatan National Forest. The purpose of the outing is to protect the habitat of red cockaded woodpeckers during the next controlled burning in Croatan National Forest. The physical labor will be moderate in difficulty, but you will be able to work at your own pace. We will be led by forest service personnel and divided up into teams of 3 to 4 who will work together clearing the area around one Longleaf pine at a time. These trees will be clearly marked with a white band. In order to participate, you must come to the outing dressed in long trousers and work shoes and bring your own work gloves. The forest service will provide helmets and tools. You also need to register in advance by filling out waiver forms for the Forest Service and for the Sierra Club. It is recommended that you also bring a lunch, water, sunscreen, and insect repellent. In order to register or find out more about the service outing, contact Robert Scull at firstname.lastname@example.org or 252-636-5506.
