North Carolina Is One Step Closer to Tapping Offshore Wind Energy
DOI Call for Information is the First Step in the Leasing Process
Raleigh - The US Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) released a Call for Information and Nominations today for 3 lease locations in the federal waters off the North Carolina coast.
“The bottom line is that we are one step closer to developing North Carolina’s tremendous wind resource off our coast,” said Zak Keith, Offshore Wind organizer for the NC Sierra Club.
The Call is a formal notice inviting interested parties to provide submissions of interest in obtaining one or more commercial leases from the agency that would authorize the construction and operation of a renewable energy project.
Other states have already gone through this step, and recently the Department of Interior has moved forward with lease options in Virginia, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
North Carolina has the best offshore wind resources on the East Coast according to studies from UNC-Chapel Hill and the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory. There are currently no turbines in the water yet anywhere off the coast of the United States.
“Jobs in the wind industry are already coming to North Carolina, but we are exporting our manufacturing products to states like Texas and Iowa. It’s time we start building our own future,” added Zak Keith. “We have a strategic energy reserve right off our coast, and we don’t have to risk an oil spill to get to it.”
Working with the US Department of Interior to advance offshore wind energy has been a priority of the Perdue administration. “Gov. Perdue is to be congratulated for her role in advancing North Carolina’s clean energy future,” said Keith.
