If you would like to become a new Sierra Club Outings Leader here in North Carolina, please complete this new leader application.

 

Outings Leader Training (OLT) @ Hanging Rock

August 22-24, Hanging Rock State Park, Danbury, NC

 

Training included:

  • The Sierra Club Outdoor Leadership Training OLT201 (advanced OLT, this is required training to lead an overnight outing away from cars)
  • Basic First Aid
  • Camping/Backpacking Skills
  • Special presentation by Recreation Specialist, Trevor Hudspeth (NOLS Wilderness EMT and NC EMT) on Wilderness Survival Skills!

SIERRA CLUB OUTINGS LEADER REQUIREMENTS

All Sierra Club Outings Leaders must:

  • Be a current Sierra Club member
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Complete Sierra Club OLT101* training (this must be renewed every 4 years) by doing one of the following:
    • --Attend a Sierra Club Outings Leader Training Event in person
    • --Take OLT101 online and submit the training certificate to the local Outings Chair
  • Complete basic first aid training (this must be renewed every 4 years) and submit documentation to his/her local Outings Chair
  • Have skills appropriate to each activity he/she is leading
  • Provisionally lead a Level 1 outing and receive a positive evaluation from a mentor outings leader
  • Receive final certification approval from the local Outings Chair
  • Receive approval from the local Outings Chair prior to each outing

 

In addition to the above requirements, to lead Level 2 outings (overnight outings away from cars), one must also:

  • Complete Sierra Club OLT201 Training (this must only be completed once)
  • Provisionally lead a Level 2 outing and receive a positive evaluation from a mentor outings leader
  • Receive approval from the local Outings Chair prior to each outing

  Leaders who were active prior to March 1, 2006 (and have not lapsed more then four years) may be grandfathered in by their local Outings Chairs.

Explore Our Wild North Carolina

Please tell your outings participants about our Explore Our Wild North Carolina Wilderness Area Challenge!

  • Commit to be a Wilderness Explorer and sign up for the challenge by July 31, 2014
  • All registrants receive a special Wilderness Explorer Patch
  • Complete the challenge by visiting all NC Wilderness Areas by July 15, 2015 and receive a recognition award plus a limited edition patch commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the North Carolina Wilderness Act
